Do Business in Vietnam

Who is Nicolas Thành?

Hey guys, I am a French entrepreneur based in Vietnam. After 10 years living in Saigon I moved to Da Nang with my family in 2024. I am the founder of Scale in Peace. I arrived in Vietnam in 2012 for several reasons. And I stayed in Vietnam since then doing business.

To connect with me, there are essentially 2 ways: message me and subscribe to my newsletter. It will allow you to receive tips from my learnings and updates about my projects. Simple 🙂!

How to start a business in Vietnam as a foreigner?

There are basically two ways to start a business in Vietnam as a foreigner: 100% foreigned owned company or partner with a local. The first has strict requirements and will be more demanding but theorically safer. The second is the easiest and more affordable. That’s how I opened my hostel.

I shared in details how I opened and run my hostel for 4 years in Vietnam. It’s a video interview here.

Then, the hardest is to grow your network, pitch your idea and keep faith! I give more details on these 3 key aspect in this article.

What is the most important to know for foreigners doing business in Vietnam?

The ultimate advice I give to “westerners” who arrive in Vietnam to do business is to learn to control their emotions. It’s a game-changer if properly applied because in Vietnam people hate “hot temper”. And a foreigner will loose face and credibility if they start getting angry. See why and learn more in my short video.

What is the most important piece of advice you have for foreigners doing business in Vietnam?

Based on my 10+ years of experience in Vietnam, I advise to practice self-control and patience, especially when facing challenges or disagreements. Foreigners usually underestimate the importance of being polite and respectful in interactions with locals.

Tips for all Entrepreneurs

How can I make smarter decisions for my business, especially when facing different types of situations?

Since Covid I completely changed how I make decisions (see the 4 things I changed). The world right now is very unstable and very interconnected. So the traditional ways for business owners to make decisions are not working anymore.

If I used to make 3 years forecats and advanced business plans (like most business school teacher will ask you to do), now I make weekly plans instead! It is way simpler for me and way easier to adjust to the reality of our world.

I also simplified a lot my decision making with the “Hell yes, or no” technique. If you didn’t know about this technique, the article linked here is 10 seconds read and a game changer for deciding where to bring your life next.

I also wrote 10 hacks to make better decisions, that I still use as of today. If you need guidance on how to implement the best decision making techniques, let’s chat. There is no reasons for you to be stuck.

What’s the most effective way to prioritize my tasks and avoid feeling overwhelmed?

I recommend using the Eisenhover matrix and focusing on the blocking issue. Creating a “to-finish list” instead of a “to-do list” to focus on what you can realistically accomplish each day is my ultimate hack, though. This helps control your day and motivates you by ensuring you finish tasks. More on this in my 3 minutes video here.

How do I balance my entrepreneurial spirit with the need for business management?

You need both an entrepreneurial mindset for vision and a business management mindset for operations. See why here. I encourage entrepreneurs to learn about business management to effectively handle accounting, finance, marketing, sales, and other operations. Because it’s easy to say “I am an entrepreneur”, but the ultimate goal is to be completely free from your own operations in business. And learning how to manage your business properly is changing everything.

How can I improve my online visibility and attract more customers to my business?

I offer a free checklist to help fix your online visibility. It is more like a complete roadmap actually, so… enjoy! I also suggest engaging in Facebook groups to interact with potential customers and create a backlink to your Facebook page. I emphasize the importance of having a website that is set for conversion. Additionally, I suggest that an FAQ page may be better than a blog for small businesses to improve visibility.

How can I ensure my team is aligned and motivated, especially on Monday mornings?

For this, I recommend the work of Coach Loan Tran who is better than anyone else to explain how to build dream teams. I suggest implementing a “Monday morning meeting” (MMM) to align tasks, check on the previous week’s progress, and plan for the upcoming week. This involves reviewing to-do lists, discussing past events, and checking the progress. I also suggest that you ask yourself “how can I help you today” to encourage them to solve their own problems. See more in this video sharing beginners management tips.

How can I manage my team effectively, especially as a first-time manager?

I recommend a leadership approach that involves going to your employees and asking them how you can help them. I suggest that you encourage them to propose solutions to problems. I also advise to provide a budget for decision making (both financial and for mistakes) and ensure they learn from mistakes. See the video here.

What is the best way to learn from my failures in business?

Failure is part of the process. Actually, my goal today is to fail as much as possible. With maturity, you learn that failures are excellent experiences. If you don’t do anything, you never fail.. for doers like us, there is no choice: we got to take risks, we have to accept to fail; and eventually success! I shared some tips here on embracing failures to become a successful entrepreneur.

What’s a good way to approach content creation for my small business?

A small business doesn’t need millions of views from your online content to be a thriving business. What you need is 1000 raving fans.

You need to create content. It’s crucial. Creating videos is the most daunting but the best way I think; mainly because that’s what people consume more and they can be repurposed into podcasts (go listent to Creators in Vietnam), blog articles and social media content. I also recommend focusing on authenticity (see my video explaining why) and sharing your daily experiences and insights about your business.

Content creation is a tool to impact more people and scale your business’ reach and it goes along with a good SEO strategy. No idea what is best between SEO and Social media? Watch my take on this.

How do I know if I need to redesign my website?

There are essentially five reasons you might need to redesign your website:
– outdated content (poor communication),
– lack of responsiveness on mobile devices,
– poor user experience,
– low visibility on search engines,
– and slow loading performance.

I recommend using tools such as Google Search Console and Pagespeed Insights to assess your website’s performance. I offer a checklist to help DYI the problems and find solutions.
